چکیده

The International Standards organisation (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) have through their Joint Technical Committee for Information Technology (ISO/IEC JTC1/SC7), produced a new software process assessment standard. This standard will enable software development organisations to assess their software development capabilities and then use the information resulting from the assessment to improve themselves. This new software process assessment standard will soon be released and is currently being tested on a trial basis in industries throughout the world, including South Africa. The aim of the trials is to determine the new software process assessment standard’s practicability, efficiency and consistency in use. This paper is about the application of the new software process assessment standard in the academic setting of the University of the Witwatersrand. Five software producing sections were assessed: SEAL, Givati and Fourie Associates, Fluids Research Group, Manufacturing Technology Group and the Power group. The aim was to develop a benchmark for software development capability in the university and to provide information for the further improvement of the new software process assessment standard and its assessment tool, SOQ.

Investigation Correspondence between CMMI-DEV and ISO/IEC 15504

CMMI and ISO/IEC 15504 are two main models for software process assessment and improvement. Both models have staged and continuous representations but these are different. Continuous representations of the models propose the different sets of processes (process areas). The differences of staged representations are even more essential. CMMI staged representation is based on the ideas of a classi...

Comparison of Maturity Levels in CMMI-DEV and ISO/IEC 15504

Although a classic staged maturity framework with 5 levels was introduced by W. S. Humphrey back in 1988, its basic ideas remain essentially unchanged and they are still employed in CMMI and other maturity models. ISO/IEC 15504, formerly known as SPICE, has promoted a continuous model for process capability assessment. Not long ago SPICE community recognized the benefits of a staged representat...

The reliability of ISO/IEC PDTR 15504 assessments

During phase two of the SPICE trials, the Proposed Draft Technical Report version of ISO/IEC 15504 is being empirically evaluated. This document set is intended to become an international standard for Software Process Assessment. One thread of evaluations being conducted during these trials is the extent of reliability of assessments based on ISO/IEC PDTR 15504. In this paper we present the fir...

SPICE: A Generic Model for Interoperability Assessment?

Measuring interoperability implies establishing measures of merit to evaluate the degree of interoperability between systems. This is the purpose of so-called maturity models, describing the stages through which systems should evolve to reach higher completeness in the realization of a given objective. This paper reviews the main maturity models for interoperability, comparing the different asp...

The Internal Consistency of the ISO/IEC 15504 Software Process Capability Scale

ISO/IEC 15504 is an emerging international standard for software process assessment. It has recently undergone a major change in the rating scale used to measure the capability of processes. The objective of this paper is to present a follow up evaluation of the internal consistency of this process capability scale. Internal consistency is a form of reliability of a subjective measurement instr...
